Happy Kwanzaa!

Dear Roosevelt Community,

As the winter season continues, our hearts are warmed not only by the chill outside but also by the ongoing holiday festivities and the joy of acknowledging the diverse traditions that define our unique community. In this spirit, I want to shine a spotlight on Kwanzaa, a remarkable holiday that adds to the vibrant tapestry of the Roosevelt School District.

Kwanzaa, observed from December 26 to January 1, is more than just a celebration; it is a lively affirmation of African heritage, family, and community. Conceived in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, Kwanzaa draws inspiration from African harvest festivals, intertwining cultural values with seven guiding principles known as the Nguzo Saba: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).

Throughout the seven days of Kwanzaa, families light the Kinara, a seven-branched candelabra with candles representing each principle. Each day brings reflections, discussions, and activities that strengthen family bonds and community ties. From the rhythmic beats of drumming and the harmonious melodies of singing to the communal feast of Karamu, Kwanzaa provides a beautiful platform to connect with history, celebrate individuality, and embrace the power of collective action.

As a united school district committed to inclusivity and respect, we recognize the immense value in cherishing and honoring the diverse holidays our community observes. Like every other cultural celebration, Kwanzaa enriches our learning environment and serves as a poignant reminder of the unique tapestry of beliefs and traditions that make us stronger together.

This holiday season, let us all take a moment to learn about Kwanzaa, participate in its festivities, and embrace the spirit of unity and purpose that it embodies. We celebrate our unique differences and create a vibrant, inclusive school community where everyone feels seen, valued, and empowered.
