ROOSEVELT, NEW YORK (MARCH 2025)—Students at Roosevelt Middle School in the Roosevelt School District recently embraced their creative side by exploring the transformative power of self-expression through art therapy. The innovative approach to emotional and mental well-being is providing a unique opportunity for Roosevelt students to build resilience, boost confidence, and discover their voice.
"The benefits of Art Therapy extend far beyond artistic expression," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shawn Wightman. "Our students are gaining a deeper understanding of themselves while building valuable skills that will serve them throughout their lives. It's truly inspiring to witness their growth and confidence as they explore this form of creative self-expression."
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative modalities, such as drawing, painting, sculpting and other art forms, to help individuals explore and process their emotions, thoughts and experiences. It is based on the idea that the creative process involved in making art can be a powerful way to express feelings that may be difficult to put into words.
Through their involvement in various art therapy activities, students are developing important life skills such as emotional regulation, problem-solving, and self-reflection. These sessions encourage students to express their thoughts and feelings, fostering personal growth and enhancing their ability to navigate life's challenges. The sessions are proving to be a powerful tool in helping them develop stronger emotional resilience and a sense of belonging, both of which are critical during the middle school years.
This initiative is part of the district’s ongoing commitment to fostering the mental and emotional well-being of all students. As they continue to explore and express themselves creatively, the district look forward to seeing how these experiences will shape their personal growth and self-confidence.
