ROOSEVELT, NEW YORK (MARCH 2025)—The Roosevelt School District marked National Reading Month in March with a series of engaging and inspiring guest reading sessions at Ulysses Byas Elementary School. Throughout the month, the district welcomed a variety of distinguished community leaders to share their love for literature with Roosevelt students, encouraging them to develop a lifelong passion for reading. A highlight of the month’s events included a special session featuring New York State Senator Siela Bynoe and Town of Hempstead Deputy Supervisor and Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby.
“We are thrilled to have our dedicated community leaders share their love of literacy with our students in honor of National Reading Month," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shawn Wightman. “Senator Bynoe and Councilwoman Goosby are outstanding role models—their support is testament to the strength of the Roosevelt community.”
The lawmakers joined the students at Ulysses Byas Elementary School to read aloud, fostering an appreciation for the power of books and storytelling. Their participation in the reading program allowed the students to connect with influential figures while also promoting the importance of literacy.
This guest reading program is part of the Roosevelt School District’s ongoing commitment to promoting literacy and creating meaningful connections with local leaders. By integrating community involvement with educational initiatives, the District aims to enhance students' academic growth and foster a deeper engagement with the world around them.
The Roosevelt School District continues to prioritize literacy programs throughout the year, providing students with the tools and resources needed to succeed academically and beyond.
